TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian official hailed the successful organization of this year’s Arbaeen ceremony and said it was held without any security incidents.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Saturday, Shahriari Heidari highlighted the preparations for participation of Iranian pilgrims in the ceremony, and said some two million pilgrims from the country took the spiritual journey to Iraq.

He also said despite extensive threats against the pilgrims in Iraq, all threats were foiled thanks to the vigilance of security forces.

Heidari further stressed that preparations for next year’s event will start as soon as possible.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy city marking Arbaeen.

The day of Arbaeen fell on Tuesday, October 30, this year.
