TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 16th edition of the international Quran competition of Tunisia will kick off in the city of Carthage on Saturday.

The number of the contenders in this year’s competition is 31, Tunis Press website reported.

They are from 22 countries, according to the organizers.

Named after Allamah Bin Arafah, the competition will begin in a ceremony today and run until Thursday.

Tunisia’s religious affairs minister, Ahmed Azum, will deliver a speech at the opening ceremony.

The participants compete in memorization, Tafseer and Tarteel recitation of the Quran.

Tunisia is a North African country bordering the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert.

Islam is the official state religion in Tunisia. Approximately 99 percent of the population of the country is Muslim.
