Al-Hussary, First Qari Whose Tarteel Recitation of Entire Quran Was Recorded on Cassette

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Tuesday marked the 40th anniversary of the death of one of Egypt’s most prominent Quran reciters.

 

Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Hussary was a Qari widely acclaimed for his accurate recitation of the Quran.

He was the first Qari to release his Tarteel recitation of the entire Quran in cassettes.

Born on September 17, 1917, in a village in the Gharbia Governorate of Egypt, al-Hussary has been among the most renowned Quran reciters in the country.

He committed the entire Quran to memory by age 8 and started reciting at public gatherings by age 12.

In 1944, he came first among 200 participants in a competition held to select the best Qari.

Al-Hussary was elected the head of the Muslim World’s Union of Quran Reciters in 1968.

He died on November 24, 1980, during a trip to Kuwait.

The renowned Qari bequeathed one-third of his property to be spent on serving the Holy Quran and helping Quran memorizers.
