TEHRAN (IQNA) – Man is intrinsically after the truth. He wants to hear, see and tell the truth, but sometimes he forgets his nature and by telling lies abandons the truth.

Telling Lies Erodes Trust

This is while lying contradicts man’s nature and reality.

There are different motivations for telling lies but what matters is not getting used to something that is contrary to the soul and to the reality of being human and leads one to a point where he loses his value and status.

The Holy Quran says that telling a lie and something that one does not believe in is what hypocrites do: “When the hypocrites come to you, they say, ‘We testify that you are the Messenger of God.’ God knows that you are His Messenger. God testifies that they hypocrites are liars.” (Surah Al-Munafiqun, Verse 1)

The Quran refers to Satan as the origin of lies and warns that Satan encourages people to lie and uses lies to reach its goals about deceiving people.

“Should I tell you to whom the satans come? They come to every sinful liar.” (Surah Ash-Shu’ara, Verses 221-222)

Lying, as a moral vice and a personal and social sin has many consequences, the most important one of which in the social sphere is eroding trust in one another in society.

When lies spread in a society, people cannot trust one another and what everyone says in any area.

The one who receive the most harm from lying though is the liar himself. Lying is like a termite within one’s existence that gradually erodes his character, reputation and status.

“A believing person from the people of the Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Would you kill a man just because he says God is my Lord? He has brought you illustrious miracles from your Lord. If he speaks lies, it will only harm him, but if he speaks the Truth, some of his warnings may affect you. God does not guide a transgressing liar.” (Surah Ghafir, Verse 28)
