TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s Noor Quranic convoy arrived in the holy city of Karbala on Thursday and attended a Quranic recitation session organized by the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine.

The convoy is set to hold various Quranic programs during the ongoing Arbaeen pilgrimage in the holy Iraqi city.

The Thursday Quranic circle at the Astan was held with attendance of talents from Iran and Iraq.

The Iranian convoy includes 21 Quran reciters and two Tawasheeh (religious singing) groups.

Among the qaris selected to join the convoy are Mehdi Foroughi and Meysam Hamidinik from Qom province, Hassan Hakimi, Mehdi Gholamnejad, Hamid Reza Ahmadivafa and Mojtaba Parvizi from Tehran, Mostafa Ahmadi Mohammadiyeh and Seyed Ruhollah Lesantusi from Razavi Khorasan, Mohammad Mehdi Sarvestani from Fars, and Yousef Jafarzadeh from Hormozgan.

The Quranic working group of the headquarters’ cultural-educational committee has selected the convoy’s members from among the applicants who had registered their names last month.

The selection process included assessing the applicants’ Quranic talents and qualities, experience, and level of efforts to improve their Quranic skills.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s Arbaeen falls on September 17.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

The pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to the holy city.

The members of Iran’s Noor Convoy perform different Quranic and religious programs, including recitation of the Quran, Adhan (call to prayers), and Tawasheeh on the road between Najaf and Karbala during the Arbaeen march.
