Mashhad Hosts 2nd Int’l Mazarat Photo Festival

IQNA – The second Mazarat International Photo Festival, which showcases images of tombs and shrines in the Islamic world, concluded on Saturday in Mashhad, a city in northeastern Iran.

Amir Mahdi Hakimi, the head of the Institute of Artistic Creations of Imam Reza shrine, said at the closing ceremony that the festival had received more than 7,000 submissions from 1,711 photographers in 52 countries. Of those, 5,489 were from Iranian photographers and 2,154 were from foreign photographers.

A jury selected 115 works by 95 photographers for inclusion in a festival book and exhibition, Hakimi said. The selected works included 73 by 61 Iranian photographers and 42 by 34 photographers from other countries. Seven works received special distinctions.

The festival awarded prizes of 1,500 euros, 1,000 euros and 750 euros to the first-, second- and third-place winners, respectively.

Hakimi also announced that Farshid Ahmadpour had won the golden medal of the Razavi Art School for compiling a book of photographs of the architecture of Imam Reza shrine.

Hakimi said that tombs and shrines had cultural and symbolic significance in Shia and Islamic traditions, representing civilization and identity. He said that such structures had contributed to the development of various arts, such as tile work and architecture, in different regions of the Islamic world. He also said that tombs and shrines had multiple roles in shaping human relationships with oneself, nature and society.

The Mazarat Photo Festival aimed to capture and depict some of these diverse aspects of tombs and shrines in the Islamic world, he added.

The exhibition of the selected works ran from Jan. 5 to Jan. 7 at the Rezvan Gallery in Mashhad.
